Bellumartis da un salto internacional con
su proyecto de dar a conocer los artistas militares más importantes del panorama
artístico actual. Hoy vamos a conocer a uno de los más afamados artista
irlandeses y asiduo ilustrador de la editorial Osprey Publishing, referente
mundial en el sector.
Es Sean O´Brogain, con un dibujo
realista y con una gama de colores con una clara influencia del comic da a sus
obras un estilo propio e inconfundible. Sus ilustraciones dan luz a la historia
desde la antigua Roma hasta la Segunda Guerra Mundial pero sobre todo a la de
su amada Irlanda, especialmente las luchas contra los ingleses durante la Edad Moderna.

Vivo y trabajo en Donengal, en el
noroeste de Irlanda. He estado trabajando de mi arte profesionalmente desde
1994. Aunque probé otras cosas, siempre acabe regresando al arte.
Además estuve involucrado en la
reconstrucción histórica desde 1995-2011 pero lo deje finalmente ya que consumía
mucho tiempo y no me iba a llevar tan
lejos como yo deseaba llegar.
Yo he trabajado en una amplia variedad
de periodos históricos desde el mesolítico hasta la década de los cuarenta y
para diferentes clientes tanto públicos como particulares.
Durante un tiempo solía hacer obras
murales pero el cartílago de mi rodilla estaba dislocado lo que me impedía estar
de pie mucho tiempo. Aunque ahora la tengo bien sigo con la ilustración de
libros.
Mi trabajo ha sido también usado por
varios museos, sellos de correos del National
Postal Service y centros de visitantes como el de la Batalla Boyne y más recientemente para el National Museum of Ireland en la Conmemoración
de Clonfard 1014-1214.
Pero la mayor parte de mi trabajo es para la editorial Osprey
Publishing.
I live and work in Donegal, in the North
West of Ireland. I have been working on my art professionally since about 1994-ish.
Even though i tried many other things, I have always ended up back doing art.
I was also involved in re-enactment
from 1995-2011, but i left finally as it very time consuming and i had gone as
far as i wished to go with this medium.
I have worked on a wide selection
of periods (from the mesolithic to 1940s) and for a many different clients,
such as Government
agencies and prívate commision’s.
For a period of time i used do
mural work, but the cartilage in my knee got dislodged so i was no longer able
to stand for long periods. I got it fixed but its mostly books i work on now.
My work has also been used work for
a number of museums, stamps for the NAtional Postal service and visitor
attractions such as the “Battle of the
Boyne visitor centre” and more recently for the National Museum of Ireland
for their “Clontarf
1014-1214” commemoration. But most of my work is for Osprey
Publishing.

-¿Cómo comenzaste a pintar? / When did
you start painting?
No sé, siempre he estado dibuajndo y
pintando desde que era niño. En realidad solía “mejorar” fotos y dibujar en
todos los libros familiares incluso en La Biblia y la enciclopedia, lo que no
le gustaba a mi padre.
Mi padre fue herido mientras trabaja en
Inglaterra así que él estuvo en casa mucho tiempo durante mi infancia. Así
porque a él le gustaba la historia y las películas de aventura tuvimos que ver
muchas películas antiguas durante mi niñez así que yo estuve expuesto a muchos
libros documentales, películas e Historia.
Como yo vivía de niño en una Gaeltacht, zona de lengua
irlandesa o Gaélica, donde muchos ancianos seguían la tradición oral así que
escuche viejas historias de la antigüedad. Crecí con la historia de los Miliesios que España eran nuestros co-religionarios y amigos frente a los
Ingleses, sobre como nuestros nobles fueron a Flandes (the Flight
of the Earls 1608) que yo convertí en obra de arte en 2007
para el servicio postal. También de cómo los irlandeses sirvieron a España
como fieles soldados en sus guerras y como los jefes Gaélicos trataron de salvar a los españoles que
naufragaron en Irlanda en 1588.
Pero como de niño amaba la asignatura
de Religión pinte a menudo sobre este tema en el colegio. Las escuelas primarias siguen dirigidas en Irlanda
por la Iglesia (80%) por eso era la asignatura mas importante cuando yo iba al colegio.
I dont know, i have always been
drawing and painting since i was a child. In fact i used to “improve” photos
and drawing in all the family books including
the bible and encyclopedia’s (not very popular with my father ;¬)
My father was injured while working
in England, so he was at home most of my childhood. So because he liked history
and adventure movies we got to see a lot of the old films as a children, so i
was exposed
to a lot of books, documentaries, films and history as a result.

As i live in a Gaeltacht (Irish language
area)as a child, there where many old people who still had the oral tradition,
so i heard the old storiesb from ancinet times. So I was raised with the
stories of the Milesian’s, that Spain was our co-religionists and friends
against the English, how our nobility went to Flandres (the Flight of the Earls
1608) which i did artwork for our National
Postal service in 2007 (see links), how the Irish Served Spain as faithful
soldiers in her wars and how the Gaelic chiefs tried to save the Spanish who
were shipwrecked in Ireland
in 1588.
But as a child i loved the
religious subjects aswell and frequently
drew pictures of these things at school. The Primary Schools here are still run
by the church (80%) so religión was considered the most important subject of
all when i was in school.
-¿Cuáles son las principales influencias
de tu pintura? / primary painting influences?
El periodo barroco y escuela academicista
francesa, Caravaggio, Ter Boch, Charles Barque, Bougerue, Jerome Detaille, Don Troiani,
Jan Wyck and Dirk Maas y muchos más. Si yo pudiera pintar como alguien sería
como Jean Alaux, amo sus pinturas “La Batalla de
Denain” o Phillipiteax`s “Fontenoy”
pero hay muchos artistas que vería como
influencias pero yo siempre estoy aprendiendo y hay muchas cosas que desearía
hacer mejorar.
The baroque period and french
academic school, Caravaggio, Ter Boch, Charles Barque, Bougerue, Jerome,
Detaille, Don Troiani, jan Wyck and Dirk Maas and many more. If i could paint
like anyone it would be like Jean Alaux i love his painting “le Bataille de
Denain” or Phillipiteax’s “Fontenoy”…but
there are so many artists, i would look at as influences, but i am always
learning and there are many things i wish i could do better.

-¿Conoces a algún pintor bélico
español? Do you Know any spanish war painter?
Por supuesto Velazquez (El aguador es
maravilloso) tanto como otros. Pero amo
el nuevo arte, alguno de los que ví en tu blog… como Peña, Olazabal o Dalmau.

of course (the water seller is amazing)as well as others. But i love the new art, many of who i have seen on
your blog….such as Pena, Olazabal and Dalmau
-¿Qué técnicas pictóricas
prefieres? / preferred painting techniques?
Pinto en Acrílico sobre lienzo o papel
Arches, pero he comenzado a trabajar en oleo. El Acrílico puede ser una manía
pero el color es más brillante, el oleo es más fácil y más delicado. Pero además
yo trabajo con pincel Indian red y negro . Encuentro esto muy liberador y
relajante.
I paint in Acrylic either on canvas
or Arches paper, but i have started working in oil. Acrylic can be tricky to
use it as the color can become very bright, oils is easier and more subtle. But
i also do work in indian red or black pencil. I find this very liberating and
relaxing.

-¿Cuándo descubriste tu pasión por
la historia militar? / When did you find your interest for military history?
Siempre he tenido interés en esta
materia pero la perdí durante algunos años cuando estuve interesado en la fantasía
americana y el dibujo heavy metal pero en 1995 encontré un trabajo haciendo arte
histórico y esto cambio todo…
I have always had an interest in this subject, but i
lost this for many years when i got interested in American fantasy art and
heavy metal artwork, but in 1995 i got a job doing history artwork and this
changed everything…
-¿Tu interés en la historia es
anterior a tu actividad artística o es al revés? /What was first, art or history?
Arte, inspirado e influenciado por el folklore,
historia y relatos bilblicos.
Art,
inspired and influenced by folklore, history and bible stories.
-¿En qué períodos históricos estás
más interesado? / preferred historical periods?
Algo sobre la Irlanda anterior a 1815, pero probablemente 1500-1760.
Anything
involving the Irish pre-1815, but probably 1500-1760ish.
-¿Qué
batalla te gustaría pintar y por qué? / what battle would you like to
illustrate and why?
Oh solo una es una broma, Almansa sería
interesante, Fontenoy 1745, el Boyne 1690 o Aughrim 1691, la batalla de Kinsale
1601 o Smerwick 1580.
Yo estoy trabajando en Ramillies 1706 en el presente.

La historia de Francisco de Cuellar,
un superviviente español de la armada de 1588 o algo sobre irlandeses que
sirvieron al imperio español desde 1586, Almansa 1707 ( yo estuve allí en 2007
como parte de un grupo irlandés, fue mi viaje más húmedo, que considerando que
vengo de Irlanda es decir mucho ,-) pero disfrute mucho, Herminio lopez era
nustro contacto de la organización era un excelente anfitrión y el pueblo de
Almansa era realmente amistoso y amable.
The Story of Francisco De Cueller,
a Spaniard shipwrecked in ireland during the Armada in 1588, or something on
the Irish who served the Spanish Empire from
1586-181, Almansa 1707 (i was there in 2007 as part of the Irish Group, it was
the wettest trip ever, considering i am from ireland that is saying something ;¬),
but i enjoyed it very much, Herminio
Gomez was our contact andone of the organisers, he was an excellent host and
the town of Almansa was really friendly and pleasant

uniformes o soldados te parecen más interesantes de pintar?What uniform o
soldier do you prefer to painting?
Los Kern irlandeses o Galloglass, no hay nada
como pintar a estos salvajes guerreros gaélicos cargando a través de los
pantanos y montañas de Irlanda,
Irish Kern or Galloglass, theres nothing
like painting these wild Gaelic warriors charging across the bogs and mountains
of Ireland.

son las fases de tu trabajo? / what´s your work process?

Un montón de dilaciones, esbozos, una
vez que tengo la idea y un modelo (algo no fácil en Irlanda) a quien hacer una fotografía,
dibujar la idea, redefinir la idea y hacer una copia para transferirla al
lienzo o papel para pintarlo.
Lot of procrastination, thumbnails,
once i get the idea i try and get a model (not easy in Ireland)to do some
photography, draw the idea up, once i get the idea refined, make a copy and
transfer this to the canvas or paper and paint it.
-¿Qué
cosas encuentras más complicadas de pintar?/ the things you find more difficult
to paint?
Lo más molesto es definitivamente
la cota de malla, pero las ropas rojas son difíciles de hacer correctamente.
The
most annoying thing is definitely chainmail, but red clothes are difficult to
get correct.
-¿Cuál
es el tiempo medio que le dedicas a una pintura?/ How much time for a standard
painting?
No se, una semana o dos pero depende puede ser más largo ;-)
I
dont know, a week or twobut it depends it can be longer;¬)
-¿Qué
cuadro te ha llevado más tiempo? / which painting took more time tan any other?
Mi pintura de las “Races os
Castlebar” fue un incidente durante la rebelion irlandesa de 1798 donde
el General Sarazan de los granaderos franceses atacó a los británicos que protegían
un puente en el pueblo de Castlebar.

painting, this was an incident during the 1798 Irish rebellion, where General
Sarazan’s French grendiers attack the british holding a bridge in Castlebar
town.

son tus planes para el futuro? / Plans for your future?
