ENTREVISTA A PAMELA PATRICK WHITE. INTERVIEW

         Su fino tratamiento de la pincelada como su paleta de colores hace pensar que nos encontramos ante una obra decimonónica aunque la captura del instante y el enfoque cinematográfico nos muestra su carácter contemporáneo. Esta obra es fruto de la mano de una mujer, de una de las artistas más famosas en el mundo del arte histórico militar, la estadounidense Pamela Patrick White.

         Os dejo con ella para que la conozcáis a ella y a su magnífica obra.

-¿Podrías presentarte brevemente a nuestros lectores? / Brief presentation for our readers.

La mayoría de mis recientes pinturas al óleo representan la historia Americana del siglo XVIII y la guerra Napoleónica. Yo empecé mi carrera como una ilustradora de libros en la ciudad de New York creando portadas para compañías como Double Day Dell, Simon and Schuster, Henry Holt  y otros. Hoy, los libros de historia y las revistas como Muzzleloader y la Contemporary Long Rifle Association usan mi trabajo en sus publicaciones...

Most of my current oil paintings represent 18th Century American history and the Napoleonic War. I started my career as a book illustrator in New York City creating cover art for Double Day Dell, Simon and Schuster, Henry Holt and others. Today, history books and magazines, such as Muzzleloader and the Contemporary Long Rifle Association, use my work in their publications.

-¿Cómo comenzaste a pintar? / When did you start painting?

Comencé a dibujar siendo una niña y primero empecé trabajando en pastel como mi abuela artista hacía.  Más tarde en mi carrera aprendí sola a pintar al óleo cuando los museos empezaron a encargarme trabajos artísticos.

I started drawing as a child and first started working in pastel as my artistic grandmother did. I taught myself to oil paint later in my career when museums began to commission artwork from me.

-¿Cuáles son las principales influencias de tu pintura? / primary painting influences?

He estudiado los temas y el uso del pincel de muchas pinturas del siglo dieciocho, que me han influenciado en mi trabajo con capa fina de óleo.

I have studied many Eighteenth Century paintings for topic and brush use which influenced me to work in thin coats of oil.

-¿Qué artistas admiras? /What artists do you admire?

Yo crecí en Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, donde N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle y Andrew Wyeth pintaban. Ellos fueron mi primera influencia seria. También me gusta el trabajo de Seargant, Jozef Brandt y Gilbert Stuart –Seargant por sus pinceladas rápidas,  Brandt por el color y sus composiciones militares y Stuart por sus retratos del siglo XVIII.

I grew up in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, where N.C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle and Andrew Wyeth painted. They were my first serious influences. I also like the work of Seargant, Jozef Brandt and Gilbert Stuart – Seargant for his fluid brush stroke, Brandt for military composition and color and Stuart for 18th Century portrait work.

-¿Conoces a algún pintor bélico español? Do you Know any spanish war painter?

Conocí a través de la red a José Ferre Clauzel cuando trabaje en la conservación de las pinturas de Hougemont. Desde entonces yo he visto su trabajo en algunas maravillosas pinturas militares españolas.

I met Jose Ferre Clauzel online when I worked on the Hougemont Preservation paintings. Since then I have watched him work on some wonderful Spanish military painings.

-¿Qué técnicas pictóricas prefieres? / preferred painting techniques?

Clásica, trabajando en delgadas capas.

Classsical, working in thin layers.

-¿Cuándo descubriste tu pasión por la historia militar? / When did you find your interest for military history?

Mi interés en la historia comenzó como un hobby en la reconstrucción de la Guerra de Independencia Americana. Yo también soy músico de manera que yo hago en la reconstrucción histórica el papel de un músico de campo tocando el flautín. Mi experiencia y la lectura me convencieron que había muchas historias militares que nunca habían sido pintadas, así que pare de pintar cubiertas de libros y empecé exclusivamente a pintar historia.

My interest in history started as a hobby in reenacting the American Revolutionary War . I am also a musician so I portray a field musician playing fife. My experiences and reading convinced me that there were many military stories that had never been painted so I quit painting book covers and started exclusively painting history.

-¿Tu interés en la historia es anterior a tu actividad artística o es al revés? /What was first, art or history?

Arte fue primero. Yo vengo de 5 generaciones de mujeres artistas en mi familia y soy una de las pocas mujeres pintando arte militar en USA.

Art was first. I have 5 generations of artistic women in my family and am one of the very few women painting military art in the USA.

-¿En qué períodos históricos estás más interesado? / preferred historical periods?

Yo disfruto con la historia americana desde 1750 hasta 1812 y la Guerra Napoleónica. También he hecho algo de militares modernos en Afganistán y me gustaría hacer más piezas modernas.

I enjoy American history 1750 through 1812 and European Napoleonic War. I have also done some modern military of Afghanistan and would like to do more modern pieces.

-¿Qué uniformes o soldados te parecen más interesantes de pintar? What unifform o soldier do youprefer to painting?

Yo encontré definitivamente que los uniformes napoleónicos eran los más interesantes y bonitos.

I definitely found the Napoleonic uniforms were the most interesting and beautiful.

-¿Qué batalla te gustaría pintar y por qué? / what battle would youlike to illustrate and why?

He estado pintando la Guerra de los Siete Años y la campaña del sur de la Guerra de Independencia Americana porque pocas cosas han sido pintadas de estos dos períodos debido a la cantidad de investigación que se necesita.

I have been painting the Seven Years War and the Southern Campaign of the American Revolutionary War because little has been painted on these two time periods due to the amount of research needed.

- ¿De la historia española que te gustaría pintar? What do you want to paint about spanish history?

La fortaleza española de San Marcos fue construida en St. Augustine, Florida, USA en el año 1672 cuando Florida perteneció a España. En 1763 los británicos tomaron el control del fuerte únicamente para perderlo de nuevo contra España en 1819. Me gustaría pintar algunas partes de esta historia para mostrar la influencia española en mi país.

Spanish Fort Castillo de San Marcos was built in St. Augustine, Florida, USA in the year 1672 when Florida belonged to Spain. In 1763 the British gained control of the fort only to lose it again to Spain in 1819. I would like to paint some part of this history to show Spains influence in my country.

-¿Cuáles son las fases de tu trabajo? / what´syourworkprocess?

Yo trabajo en al menos 4 pinturas al mismo tiempo así no me quedo estancada en una única pieza. La mitad de mi trabajo son pinturas bajo encargo y la otra mitad son elegidas por mí para exponerlas. Tomo continuamente fotos en reconstrucciones históricas y en viajes de investigación privados tomo fotos de luz, figuras y uniformes para un uso futuro y también uso modelos para posar para pinturas específicas. Después de leer detalles históricos de mi tema de pintura, hago primero un boceto en papel a lápiz para pasarlo luego al lienzo. Yo intento empezar con una paleta de colores limitada porque me gusta demasiado el color y usaría este en todo si lo tengo en frente mío. Una vez yo haya cubierto sin apretar el lienzo, dejo que seque la primera capa antes de comenzar con la segunda. Yo logro ser más concisa y detallista en cada capa.

I work on at least 4 paintings at the same time so I dont get stale on any one piece. Half of my work is commissioned paintings and half are my choice for shows. I constantly shoot photos at reenactments and private research trips collecting images of light, figures and uniforms for future use and also have models pose for specific paintings. After reading historic details on my painting topic, I do a pencil sketch first for layout then sketch it on a toned canvas. I try to start with a limited pallette because I like color too much and will use it all if it is in front of me. Once I have covered the canvas loosely I let the first layer dry before begining the second layer. I get tighter and more detailed on each layer.

-¿Qué cosas encuentras más complicadas de pintar?/ thethingsyoufind more difficult to paint?

      Yo no soy paciente y no me gustan cosas como las minúsculas hojas en los árboles.

I am not patient and don’t like things like tiny leaves on trees .

-¿Cuál es el tiempo medio que le dedicas a una pintura?/ Howmuch time for a standard painting ?

Tengo obras que me han llevado dos semanas y algunas tres años pero la media son 4 meses.

I have paintings that took two weeks and some that took three years but on the average 4 months.

-¿Qué cuadro te ha llevado más tiempo? / whichpaintingtook more time than any other?

He finalizado recientemente una pintura de 0,91 metros por 1,52 metros  de Martha Washington, que me ha llevado 3 años debido a la intensa investigación.

I recently finished a 3 foot x 5 foot painting of Martha Washington which took 3 years because of the intensive research.

-¿Cuáles son tus planes para el futuro? / Plans for your future?

He empezado una serie de caballos militares que continuaré trabajando y tengo piezas pedidas para los George Washington’s Life Guard y la Batalla de Monmouth y la Batalla de Saratoga para el National Park Service.

          I have started a series of Military Horses that I will continue to work on and have commission pieces for George Washington’s Life Guard at the Battle of Monmouth and the Battle of Saratoga for the National Park Service.
