Amantes
del arte militar hoy conoceremos a una de las artistas más reconocidas en el
mundo de la ilustración histórica. Sus obras
tratadas con un estilo muy clásico pero adaptado a los gustos actuales en
cuanto al encuadre y la elección del momento a representar, nos permiten viajar
en el tiempo especialmente al Periodo Napoleónico, su favorito. Christa forma parte de una de las sagas de ilustradores
más importante de los últimos tiempos, encabezada por su padre Richard Hooks, esta influencia se nota
en su estilo aunque su personalidad artística marca diferencias con el resto de
la familia.

nuestros lectores? / Brief presentation for our readers.
He
estado trabajando como artista e ilustradora por unos 25 años y los últimos
diez me he especializado en el Periodo Napoleonico y la Guerra Peninsular (Guerra
de la Independencia para los españoles). Diez de mis pinturas están expuestas permanentemente
en el Museo di Marengo en Italia. www.christahook.co.uk

I have worked as
an artist and illustrator for over 25 years and for the last ten years have
specialised in the Napoleonic period and the Peninsular War. Ten of my paintings are on permanent display

My
illustration work includes over 30 Osprey Publishing titles from the Norman
Knight through to WW2; the cover of Mark Urban’s ‘Rifles’ and Wartime Britain
for Shires Living Histories, various magazines including Military Illustrated
and Gloire and Empire.

-¿Cuáles son las principales
influencias de tu pintura? /Which are your primary painting influences?
No es una sorpresa que entre ellos estén Alphonse de Neuville, Edouard
Detaille y Ernest Meiisonier pero hay algunos más como Wojciech Kossak y
Fortunio Matania.
It’s not a surprise that
they include Alphonse de Neuville, Edouard Detaille and Ernest Meissonier but
there are many others including Wojciech Kossak and Fortunino Matania.
-¿Qué artistas admiras? /What artists
do you admire?
La lista no tiene fin, al igual que los anteriores, estarían Lucien
Rousselot, Frank Brangwyn, Ken Riley, Rien Poortvliet y Howard Pyle.
The list is endless, as well
as those above, and includes Lucien Rousselot, Frank Brangwyn, Ken Riley, Rien
Poortvliet and Howard Pyle.

español? Do you Know any spanish war painter?
Francisco de Goya me viene inmediatamente a la cabeza, “El tres de mayo de 1808”
Francisco Goya comes
immediately to mind- The Third of May 1808.
-¿Qué técnicas pictóricas prefieres?
/What are your preferred painting techniques?
Me encanta
dibujar con acuarela y el óleo sería mi elección preferida para pinturas
militares.
I love to draw with
watercolour and oil would be my preferred choice for the military paintings.
-¿Cuándo descubriste tu pasión por la
historia militar? / When did you find your interest for military history?
Bastante pronto gracias al trabajo de mi
padre Richard Hook quien me enseñó.
Quite early on through the
work of my father Richard Hook who trained me.
-¿Tu interés en la historia es
anterior a tu actividad artística o es al revés? /What was first, art or
history?

históricos estás más interesado? / Which are your preferred historical periods?
En las
guerras Peninsular y Napoleónicas pero estoy interesada en todas.
The Peninsular and
Napoleonic Wars but I’m interested in all.
-¿Qué uniformes o soldados te parecen
más interesantes de pintar? What unifform o soldier do you prefer to painting?
Dame un
coracero francés cada día.
Give me a French cuirassier
any day!
-¿Qué batalla te
gustaría pintar y por qué? / What battle would you like to illustrate and why?
Lo que más me interesa es retratar incidentes y acciones que han sido
solamente descritos mediante palabras.
What interests me most is
portraying incidents and actions that have only been described in words.
- ¿De la historia española que te
gustaría pintar? What do you want to paint about spanish history?
Estoy esperando hacer pronto unos cuadros por encargo de la guerra
Hispano-Estadounidense de 1898 para un coleccionista de mi obra.
I’m hoping soon to do some
commissioned paintings on the Spanish-American War 1898 for a collector of my
work.

-¿Cuáles son las fases
de tu trabajo? / what´s your work process?
Diversas. Un monton de investigación, un boceto inicial para la
composición, una fase a pincel fino antes de pasarlo a la pintura final.
Varied. Lots of research, an
initial sketch for composition, a very finished pencil stage before moving on
to the final painting.
-¿Qué cosas encuentras más
complicadas de pintar?/ What things do you find more difficult to paint?
Estoy feliz
de pintar cualquier cosa.
I’m happy to paint anything.
-¿Cuál es el tiempo medio que le
dedicas a una pintura?/ How much time for a standard painting?
Es una cuestión que siempre preguntan y realmente yo puedo hacer lo que
hago gracias a 25 años de experiencia.
It’s a
question that’s always asked and really I can only do what I do through over 25
years of experience.
-¿Qué cuadro te ha
llevado más tiempo? / Which painting did you take more time than any other?
Probablemente mis escenas de batallas de la Guerra Peninsular debido a la
cantidad de investigación y al detalle y por supuesto al uso de óleos que
llevan más tiempo, ya que para mis trabajos de ilustración uso acrílicos.
Probably my recent Peninsular War battle
scenes due to the amount of research and detail involved and of course in oils
it takes longer, for my illustration work I use acrylic.

-¿Cuáles son tus planes
para el futuro? / Plans for your future?
Está previsto, espero que en
octubre, la publicación de mi libro “Far in Advance, The Peninsular War Paintings
of Christa Hook”. Y actualmente estoy trabajando en dos encargos del 25º de Infantería Ligera Británico, uno de
Waterloo y el otro de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Además hare una colaboración
con mi hermano, que será algo totalmete diferente.
Due out, hopefully in
October, is my book Far in Advance, The Peninsular War Paintings of Christa
Hook. And I’m currently working on 2 commissions of the British 52nd Light
Infantry, one at Waterloo and one in the First World War. Also there will be a collaboration with my
brother, which will be something completely different!
