FALSO PARIS

Throughout history, different ruses were used to deceive the enemy, but this takes the cake, the attempt to create a false Paris. Blog Ptak Science Books to expose in a copy of The Illustrated London News on November 6, 1920 in which reflected this plan.

The advent of aviation in this conflict substantially modify modern warfare and for the first time began to bombard the cities both for strategic purposes as propaganda. The German Empire had the twin of large "grossflugzeun" or "Gotha" which already had been bombarded with a load of 600 pounds of explosives London that put on alert to the French Government. The weak point of aviation at the time was that was usually visual navigation along roads or rivers, and the French took advantage of the creating a decoy North of the capital to mislead the Germans.

Under the leadership of the Secretary of State for Aeronautics, and DCA (air defense), developed the project of a fake Paris in early 1918. The decision is made to simulate not some streets, but all the Parisian agglomeration. Needed a loop similar to the river Seine which runs through the capital and that the areas which would nominate to the bombardment of the enemy were not inhabited localities, the ideal place was the forest of Saint Germain.

We selected three areas in the Northwest and northeast regions of Paris. In the first, the project was to create a false Saint-Denis, Aubervilliers, and stations of the East and North. In other places are reproduciria small belt, the Champs-Elysées and other notable points of Paris (zone B, above) and industrial objectives (zone C) railroad.

The DCA, no they had means of realization, and it had to involve private industry. Fernand Jacopozzi, who took the contract due to "his wit and simplicity of its means", told Le Figaro in February 1932, it was the death of the Italian electrical engineer. They signed a first for the region of Elm Morlu, northeast of Saint-Denis. Jacopozzi, which has illuminated a few years before the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysées and many other monuments of Paris.

The construction of the "fake goal of the Morlu Elm" began with false East station, located between Seyran and Villepinte. Including "buildings, exit routes, trains to the docks and trains, primers of tracks and signs and a plant with buildings and blast furnaces in movement". The wooden buildings were covered with "canvases painted, translucent, and tense" to imitate dirty glass ceilings. The main difficulty was the intensity of illumination. He had to call the attention of the aviators enemies with the light, but not their suspicions.

Emphasizing "the art of electrical engineer", and the use of lights of different colors (white, yellow and red) alternately pretending to smoke produced by the locomotives and trains that they simulated with wood on the ground, and lateral spotlights projected light as if it come out of the interior of the cars. The entire device camouflage was extended from 1800 to 2000 metres with a gradual illumination from one end to another.

German bombing ended before that project was finished, and without providing services to the defense of France.
